| why the 4th Uckfield? |

… because the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and even 5th Uckfield Scout Groups have all been and gone!
The 1st Uckfield Troop (originally registered as the 1st Ridgewood Troop) was one of the first to be formed in the country (and therefore the world!) This was in March 1909, just two years after Robert Baden Powell had founded the movement in 1907, and shortly after he published his book "Scouting for Boys". The 1st Uckfield Troop closed at the outbreak of war in 1939.
The 2nd Uckfield (St. Michael's), based in New Town, began life in 1920 and continued until at least 1933.
The 3rd Uckfield Group comprised only 'Rover' Scouts (the equivalent of today's Explorers) and ran from 1933 to 1939.
The 4th Uckfield 'Holy Cross' Scout Group was formed in July 1933 and was originally confined to boys from Holy Cross Church. In 1935 it acquired its own Scout Hut in Selby Road. It thrived until 1947 but then dwindled to nothing, before being revived in 1955 with new premises behind Holy Cross Church. From then onwards, the Group gradually expanded, splitting into two troops (Shackleton and Wealden) in 1975. In 1984 (?) the hut burnt down leading to the move in 1986 to the present HQ in Rocks Park Road. In 1990 (?) the troops split again creating the third troop (Pegasus). All three troops closed in April 2002, to be replaced by the new 'Phoenix' Troop and the 'Mallory' Explorer Unit.
The 5th Uckfield Group was formed in New Town, Uckfield, in 1974, in response to growing demand within the expanding town and continued until the mid 80s, before being 'taken over' by the larger 4th Uckfield Group.
Further details of the history of Scouting in Uckfield and surrounding villages, up to 1977, can be found in the booklet "70 years of Scouting in Uckfield & District", a copy of which is held in the Uckfield Public Library.
