The 4th Uckfield "Phoenix" Scout Troop caters for young people between the ages of 10½ and 14 who are interested in teamwork, fun and adventure.
The troop usually meets at the Scout HQ on Rocks Park Road, from 7:00 to 9:00pm on Fridays, most of the year,
except when we are away doing outdoor activities such as climbing, hiking, camping etc etc.
(see the current programme for details).
The troop was formed on St George's Day, 23rd April, 2002, following the introduction of the new national system and new age range into Ashdown District.
Until then, there had been three troops in Uckfield - Wealden, Shackleton and Pegasus - (see history page),
each with an age range from 10½ to 16. Under the new system, all of the older Scouts (those aged 14 to 16) and two of the leaders transferred into the new Explorer Scout Unit,
leaving 'Phoenix' Troop to rise from the ashes by bringing together the remaining Scouts and leaders from all three former troops.

It did so very successfully! The troop started out with four leaders and 35 members, including (for the first time in Uckfield), girls as well as boys.
So far, these numbers have been maintained. Our older Scouts regularly 'move on' to the local ('Mallory') Explorer Unit, usually at the end of the term in which they become 14,
but new recruits keep coming through from the 'Kipling' and 'Mafeking' cub packs at a similar rate to keep the troop at full strength.
New Scouts have also joined us from outside the movement and from surrounding villages and towns.
From the outset, Phoenix Troop has set high standards and has a programme which is both exciting and successful.
The programme is largely geared towards preparing the Scouts for taking part in District and County events,
such as the Survival Skills weekend at Broadstone Warren, the Ashdown Hike, the Sussex 'Overland' Hike, the Brecon Beacons Challenge, the Lewes Raft Race,
Bewl Water Sailing Weekends, the East Sussex 'Colditz' Challenge, District Adventure weekends in Purbeck and the Peak District, the Sussex 'Downsman' Hike,
the East Sussex Mountain Bike Challenge, the 'Wealden' Hike, the Ashdown District 'Soakout' and the District Backwoods Cooking Competition.
The reason for this is not simply that we like to do well in these events (though we often seem to do that - see here) …
it is because such events are what 'Scouting' is all about:- teamwork, adventure, responsibility and fun! Our aim is for the Scouts to "BE PREPARED" for such things,
and for the challenges and adventures of life itself
